Glossary

Michel Eyquem de Montaigne

1533-1592

Michel Eyquem de Montaigne was a French writer and the author of the Essais.

He was an adviser to the Parlement de Bordeaux, gentleman of the bedchamber to Henri de Navarre (1577) and mayor of Bordeaux (1581–1585). Montaigne and Henri met often, and their correspondence is sizeable. On several occasions, Henri stayed at the château de Montaigne, where he listened carefully to the copious advice dispensed by his host.
